CLIMATE CHANGE AND SOCIETY

Nowadays we have experienced how the maximum temperatures during the summer have reached more extreme values, and in winter as the rainfall is more absent. These events are associated with what has been called global warming. In Chile, other effects related to climate warming are increased drought, increased forest fires, loss of biodiversity of plants and animals, melting of glaciers and rising sea levels.  Such effects in our country are due to its own characteristics such as low elevation coastal areas, semi-arid, arid and forested areas, susceptibility to natural disasters, areas prone to drought and desertification, urban areas with air pollution problems and mountainous ecosystems (Center for Climate and Resilience Research, 2020).  It was before the visible consequences of global warming that the scientist Wallace Smith Broecker popularized the term in a publication in the journal Science in 1975, which he mentions that the planet's climate could change in short periods...

MY FUTURE JOB

As I study forestry engineering, I have the possibility of working in an office like in the forest. Working in the forest is as interesting to me as working in an office, because I like to use geographic information systems (GIS) to generate data, analyze spatial information and create maps. Therefore, I would like to work in a consultancy evaluating environmental impact studies, since work in the forest and work in an office complement each other well. I also like politics in general, especially environmental, therefore I would like to work in the government generating public policies. Regarding working abroad, I see it as a possibility if I work in an organization that promotes the protection of forests and the environment, especially in the context of climate change and environmental degradation.  Currently, I am doing my thesis on the wetlands of Quilicura, which are highly degraded and are expected to be protected by the new urban wetlands law.
