CLIMATE CHANGE AND SOCIETY

Imagen
Nowadays we have experienced how the maximum temperatures during the summer have reached more extreme values, and in winter as the rainfall is more absent. These events are associated with what has been called global warming. In Chile, other effects related to climate warming are increased drought, increased forest fires, loss of biodiversity of plants and animals, melting of glaciers and rising sea levels.  Such effects in our country are due to its own characteristics such as low elevation coastal areas, semi-arid, arid and forested areas, susceptibility to natural disasters, areas prone to drought and desertification, urban areas with air pollution problems and mountainous ecosystems (Center for Climate and Resilience Research, 2020).  It was before the visible consequences of global warming that the scientist Wallace Smith Broecker popularized the term in a publication in the journal Science in 1975, which he mentions that the planet's climate could change in short periods of t

MY FUTURE JOB

Imagen
As I study forestry engineering, I have the possibility of working in an office like in the forest. Working in the forest is as interesting to me as working in an office, because I like to use geographic information systems (GIS) to generate data, analyze spatial information and create maps. Therefore, I would like to work in a consultancy evaluating environmental impact studies, since work in the forest and work in an office complement each other well. I also like politics in general, especially environmental, therefore I would like to work in the government generating public policies. Regarding working abroad, I see it as a possibility if I work in an organization that promotes the protection of forests and the environment, especially in the context of climate change and environmental degradation.  Currently, I am doing my thesis on the wetlands of Quilicura, which are highly degraded and are expected to be protected by the new urban wetlands law. As I see that there is a lot of work

MY PETS

Currently I don`t have pets, but I had two beautiful cats named Sol and Luna. Sol was yellow with white and Luna was white with black. They were sisters and lived with us from 2003 to 2010. The story of how we met them begins when my mom, my brother and I were going to the dentist and on our way to catch a bus, we saw a box with three kittens. They were very cute and small so they caught our attention. Unfortunately we had to leave them there because we had to go to the dentist. Returning home, we wondered where the kittens were, so we went looking for them. Two of them were in a tree, one yellow with white (Sol) and other black with white (Luna), so we took them home. Later, we found out that the other kitty was adopted too. We take the kittens home, but we don`t ask dad, so when he got home, he was surprised and not happy with the idea. So we had to use a lot of tricks to convince him until finally he reluctantly agreed.  Sol and Luna accompanied my brother and me in our childhood an

QUARANTINE HOBBIES

In this time of quarantine, I have had to occupy my free time in a different way than I usually did. Before I used to ride a lot, so this year what I have done is yoga, I watch youtube videos and follow routines. I'm not very consistent in the sport, but tried to do something from time to time.  Another fun and relaxing hobby for me is cooking, especially baking. I have cooked yogurt cakes, cheese cakes, and birthday cakes. I really enjoyed making my dad's birthday cake, it was a chocolate cake filled with custard. Also for Mother's Day I made a blueberry cheesecake that was very delicious. In my house, just for fun I have cooked muffins, cookies and cupcakes.  Another thing that I have done a lot is using twitter, that is my favorite social network. In general, I don`t like social networks very much, but I find twitter very interesting, because it`s an alternative way to find out, due most television channels are owned by large businessmen, so the editorial line greatly in

THE BEST HOLIDAY EVER

My most memorable vacation was when, after an internship in Frutillar, we decided with my classmates backpacking through southern Chile in the summer of 2015. We were a total of 8 people, so we felt quite safe to travel. Usually when we hitchhike, we split into groups of 4. Our first destination was Puerto Varas. I remember that we visited a really nice house museum and we also walked the streets that were around Llanquihue Lake, so the view was very beautiful. In that city we also joined two more backpackers with whom we went to Puerto Montt and camped on the beach.  Then we were lucky that a driver took us to Honropirén, including the barge. We were there for three days. I think it is one of the most beautiful places I have been. We were camping near a river and we fished with the help of a young local. Then we pass through Caleta Gonzalo and Chaitén. In Chaitén, some soldiers picked us up in a truck that apparently was transporting oil, because the guys who were in the back were all

A COUNTRY I'D LIKE TO VISIT

Imagen
CHINA: A country that has interested me for some time is China, due to the particularity of its language . In fact, two years ago I have been learning a little chinese through an app just for fun, because I like the pronunciation and the writing. I have also seen some landscapes of China that have surprised me and that I would like to visit if I have the opportunity, such as:  - The Zhangjiajie National Park located in Hunan province, which is made up of giant quartzite-sandstone monoliths, some up to 200m tall. The pillars are surrounded by dense foliage due to the humid climate throughout the year. For me, the highlight of the park is the world's tallest external elevator with a height of 326 meters to ascend to the Yuanjiajie area and the world's longest and tallest glass pedestrian bridge that stretches from 430 meters to a height of 300 meters.  Also, these landscapes inspired James Cameron to create the Hallelujah mountains in the movie "Avatar". Due to this, i
